Social media for artists
Posted February 24th, 2010 in Marketing, Web Technology
Tonight I had the great opportunity to speak at the City of Stirling’s ‘Mind Your Arts’ workshop series.
It’s always great to impart some knowledge, and although I seriously dislike the term ’social media expert’, it was fun speaking about how artists can use social media to promote their work and network with other creative minds.
The slides are below. Although they aren’t as useful without the verbal cues, I hope that you find something useful in them. Thanks to the team at City of Stirling for inviting me, and for those who attended; thanks for making me feel welcome and for all the great questions!
The websites I mention in the talk were
Flickr
YouTube
Twitter
Facebook
LinkedIn
Blogging (such as Wordpress)
If you attended the workshop, I hope to see you trying out social media soon!

Hey Miles, too bad I couldn’t hear your verbals I liked your slides and especially the notion of utilizing social media and become part of these global communication platforms.
I’m a great believer in all sorts of mash-up’s (and I’m not afraid of using those words which means I have adopted them as part of our culture and accepted them as a new reality versus rambling about their purpose). My sis is an actress and I created a webpage for her (http://www.evagaigg.com) using news updates from her twitter account (at first she was hesitant to use twitter because it’s not ‘big’ yet in Germany), photos from flickr and videos from youtube, only her CV pdf is hosted locally and the audio files are loaded using a jQuery plugin. I think it’s a really nice example of what can be done and trust me, it really bothers me that I haven’t got her personal info via facebook connnect ;)
Cheers, Mike
